X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse

X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse is a side-scrolling action game developed and published by Capcom for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was released in North America in 1994, followed by Japan and Europe in 1995. Based on Marvel Comics’ X-Men, it was Capcom’s first game built around the licence and combines elements of a platform game, beat ’em up and one-on-one fighting game.
Professor Charles Xavier sends five members of the X-Men to Genosha, where mutants are being imprisoned and forced to work. The available heroes are Beast, Cyclops, Gambit, Psylocke and Wolverine. Their investigation brings them into conflict with Sentinels, Tusk, the Brood Queen and Apocalypse before revealing a second threat: Magneto intends to attack Genosha from his orbital base, Avalon.
Each X-Man possesses a distinct set of movements and special attacks. Cyclops relies on his long-range optic blasts, Wolverine uses his claws and can climb certain walls, Gambit fights with a staff and kinetically charged cards, Psylocke employs martial arts and her psychic knife, while Beast combines exceptional strength with acrobatic movement. Many techniques are activated through directional combinations similar to those used in Capcom’s fighting games, giving the combat greater variety than a conventional side-scrolling brawler.
The opening portion contains five character-specific missions, each designed around the abilities of one hero. Later stages allow the player to choose which X-Man to use, although all five characters share the same limited supply of lives. Three hidden X symbols provide an additional life when collected within a stage, and a password issued after the initial missions allows progress to be continued. Before the final assault on Avalon, the team must also survive Danger Room battles against Omega Red and Juggernaut.
The large sprites, colourful comic-book presentation and energetic soundtrack make strong use of the SNES hardware, while the differences between the five heroes encourage repeated play. The controls are generally responsive, although some special moves can be awkward to perform and the shared lives make later stages demanding. The absence of a cooperative multiplayer mode is particularly noticeable for a game based on a superhero team. Contemporary reviews were nevertheless favourable, frequently praising its graphics, challenging action and successful adaptation of the individual X-Men’s abilities.
