Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos is a side-scrolling platform video game developed by Sunsoft and published by Acclaim Entertainment exclusively for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995, primarily in the North American market. The game is licensed from the Looney Tunes franchise and features the classic cartoon character Speedy Gonzales, known as “the fastest mouse in all Mexico,” embarking on a rescue mission against a gang of cats.

The game’s narrative centers on a group of felines called Los Gatos Bandidos who raid a Mexican village and capture its mice during a fiesta, prompting Slowpoke Rodriguez to summon his cousin Speedy to pursue them. Players control Speedy as he runs through various outdoor and hazardous environments, attempting to rescue captive mice, collect cheese, and overcome obstacles such as bottomless pits, spikes, and cages that can instantly cost lives. Arch-enemies from the Looney Tunes cartoons, including Sylvester and Robocat, appear as adversaries throughout the levels.

Gameplay in Los Gatos Bandidos has drawn frequent comparisons to other platformers of the era, with critics and players noting resemblances to the Sonic the Hedgehog series in terms of running and level flow. Speedy is equipped with a short-range kick to attack enemies and can occasionally pick up items that may be used later, but much of the game’s challenge stems from navigating terrain hazards and timing jumps rather than complex combat. The level design emphasizes forward momentum and precision, with hazards and traps that require quick reflexes.

Critical reception of Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos was mixed to negative. Contemporary and retrospective reviews praised aspects such as the game’s colorful graphics and the character’s faithful representation, but criticized the simplistic mechanics and perceived lack of depth compared to other platformers. GamePro’s review noted that while the cartoon-like presentation might appeal to younger players, the “rudimentary” run-and-jump gameplay lacked challenge for more experienced audiences, and Next Generation described the game’s mechanics and level design as poorly executed compared to its peers.

The title gained notoriety years after its release through the discovery of an unauthorized hack that replaced Speedy Gonzales with Sonic the Hedgehog, titled Sonic the Hedgehog 4, though this version is not officially associated with the original. Despite its licensed presentation, Los Gatos Bandidos remains a lesser-known entry in the broader library of 16-bit platformers of the mid-1990s, remembered chiefly by fans of Looney Tunes and collectors of SNES titles.
