4.5M plays 1985 #Action#Shooter

Battle City for the Game Boy is a handheld adaptation of Namco's tank shooter, developed by Nova and released only in Japan in 1991. It is based on the 1985 Family Computer game but expands the campaign from 35 to 50 battlefields. The same fundamental objective and most of the original terrain and bonuses were retained, while the presentation was redesigned for the monochrome portable screen. This standalone cartridge should not be confused with the different version later included in Namco Gallery Vol. 1 in 1996.

As in the NES version, the player commands a small tank and must eliminate twenty enemy vehicles in every stage. Opponents enter from the upper part of the map and attack both the player and the headquarters represented by a phoenix at the bottom. The base is destroyed by a single shell, making its defence just as important as survival and aggressive play. All fifty stages can be selected from the outset, allowing players to revisit any battlefield without first completing the preceding ones.

The maps contain destructible brick walls, resistant steel, concealing bushes, slippery ice and water that no tank can cross. Enemies vary in speed, firepower and durability, and flashing vehicles leave a random bonus when destroyed. Stars upgrade the player's tank, while other symbols provide an extra life, temporary protection, frozen enemies or the immediate destruction of every opponent currently present. The shovel briefly surrounds the headquarters with steel, an especially valuable defence when fighting far from the lower part of the map.

Because a complete battlefield does not fit on the Game Boy display, the action is shown through a scrolling window centred on the player's tank. A small radar indicates the positions of enemies elsewhere on the map, but it cannot provide the same immediate overview as the original full-screen presentation. Hostile tanks, shells and bonuses may therefore remain outside the visible area, making attacks on the base more difficult to anticipate. The handheld edition also removes the simultaneous two-player mode and the construction feature for designing custom stages.

The conversion preserves the deliberate pace and tactical character of Battle City, but the restricted view changes how its familiar maps must be approached. Its fifty selectable stages offer more content than the Family Computer original, although the loss of cooperation and the editor is significant. Simple monochrome graphics remain easy to read, and the basic controls suit short portable sessions particularly well. It is a capable adaptation with worthwhile additions, yet its scrolling viewpoint makes it both more demanding and less immediately clear than the console game that inspired it.
