Strategy X
35K plays 1981 #Action#Shooter
Strategy X is a vertically scrolling shooter developed by Konami and originally released as an arcade game in Japan and North America in 1981. It was distributed in the United States by Stern Electronics and later converted for the Atari 2600, with Konami publishing the home version. The game supports both single-player and alternating two-player play and is presented from a top-down perspective.
The player controls a tank travelling through a continuously scrolling battlefield. The vehicle can move from side to side, accelerate or slow its forward movement, while the fire button launches shells at enemy gun emplacements and obstacles. Walls and barriers must be destroyed before the tank collides with them, while enemy weapons fire projectiles from different positions and angles. The Atari 2600 version does not allow diagonal movement or diagonal firing, placing greater emphasis on anticipating enemy shots and choosing a safe route through the terrain.
Fuel management is one of the game’s central mechanics. The tank constantly consumes fuel, with marshy green areas increasing the rate of consumption and slowing its progress. Fuel depots placed along the route restore the supply when collected, but they can also be destroyed by enemy fire before the player reaches them. Losing all fuel, being hit, or colliding with an obstacle costs one of the player’s tanks. Reaching the structure at the end of the first stage leads to a second section featuring attacks from aircraft.
Retrospective reception of the Atari 2600 conversion has been mixed. MobyGames records an average critic score of 53 percent based on three reviews. Reviewers have frequently criticised the crude and sometimes confusing graphics, restricted movement and limited firing directions, while also noting the demanding enemy fire, smooth vertical scrolling and tension created by the steadily decreasing fuel supply. Although mechanically simple, the combination of shooting, obstacle avoidance and resource management distinguishes Strategy X from many other early console shooters.
