Raiders of the Lost Ark
69K plays 1982 #Adventure
Raiders of the Lost Ark is an adventure game developed and published by Atari for the Atari 2600 in 1982. Based on Steven Spielberg’s 1981 film, it was designed and programmed by Howard Scott Warshaw following the success of his earlier game Yars’ Revenge. The player assumes the role of Indiana Jones and must locate the Well of Souls, recover the lost Ark of the Covenant and prevent it from falling into enemy hands.
Rather than reproducing the film scene by scene, the game constructs a new treasure hunt from its principal characters, locations and objects. Indy begins his journey in Cairo and must explore the Marketplace, the Temple of the Ancients, a treasure chamber, the Map Room and a field of mesas hiding the Well of Souls. The Ark’s position can change between games, so memorizing a single route is not enough to guarantee success.
The adventure is controlled using both Atari joysticks. The joystick connected to the second controller port moves Indy and activates the currently selected object, while the first joystick is used to choose and discard items from his inventory. These include a whip, grenades, keys, money, a flute, a parachute and a shovel. Objects must be used in particular locations and sometimes under very specific conditions, giving the game considerably greater complexity than most contemporary Atari 2600 releases.
Progress combines experimentation with short action sequences. Indy must avoid thieves, snakes, spiders, tsetse flies and other hazards, negotiate dangerous rooms and discover how apparently unrelated items interact with the environment. Many solutions are deliberately obscure, and even the original manual provides only limited hints. The crude symbolic graphics can also make objects and locations difficult to interpret, but the variety of screens and persistent inventory create an unusually large adventure within an eight-kilobyte cartridge.
Contemporary reception was divided. Some reviewers praised its combination of puzzles, exploration and arcade movement, while others considered it confusing and less exciting than the film. Its demanding two-joystick controls and cryptic solutions make it difficult to approach without instructions, yet its ambition distinguishes it from the predominantly score-based games of the period. Raiders of the Lost Ark is therefore an important early licensed adventure: technically limited and frequently frustrating, but remarkably successful at translating Indiana Jones’s search for clues and ancient treasures into an interactive form.
