Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!

Punch-Out!! is a single-player boxing game developed and published by Nintendo for the NES in 1987. It adapts characters and ideas from the arcade games Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!!, but replaces their transparent wire-frame boxer with a clearly defined new protagonist, the small and determined Little Mac. An early gold-coloured Famicom edition was produced in limited numbers as a prize for a Japanese golf-game tournament, with Super Macho Man as its final opponent. The commercial release became Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! and ended with the reigning heavyweight champion, while Nintendo's later reissue replaced him with the fictional Mr. Dream after the licensing agreement expired.
Little Mac, guided between rounds by trainer Doc Louis, must climb through the Minor, Major and World Circuits before earning the final Dream Fight. His fourteen opponents are exaggerated personalities of widely varying size, appearance and fighting style, including Glass Joe, King Hippo, Bald Bull, Don Flamenco and Super Macho Man. Several fighters return later with faster attacks and new combinations, forcing the player to reconsider tactics that previously worked. The viewpoint places Mac low in the foreground while his much larger rival remains fully visible, and Mario makes a memorable cameo as the referee.
Mac's own repertoire is deliberately simple: left and right punches can target the head or body, while he can block, duck and dodge to either side. Stars earned by landing well-timed counterpunches may be exchanged for powerful uppercuts, with as many as three held at once, but taking a hit removes the stored stars. Success therefore depends less on rapid button pressing than on reading each opponent's gestures, avoiding a distinctive attack and striking during the brief opening that follows. In this respect Punch-Out!! plays almost like an action puzzle whose clues are conveyed through animation, sound and rhythm.
The heart counter represents Mac's ability to attack rather than his remaining health. Hearts are lost when he is hit, when he blocks, or when an opponent avoids or stops one of his punches; at zero, Mac turns pink and becomes too exhausted to strike. He must then evade incoming blows until some stamina returns, while being knocked down empties the counter immediately. His actual condition is shown separately, and limited recovery is possible between rounds, including a once-per-bout intervention from Doc Louis.
A match lasts no more than three rounds and can end by knockout, by three knockdowns in one round producing a technical knockout, or by a points decision. Each boxer requires a different score for Mac to win on points, and certain matches cannot be won by decision at all. Mac can rise from the canvas only three times during a bout; a fourth knockdown leaves him unable to continue. Defeats may lead to a rematch or push him backwards through the rankings, while a third loss ends the campaign, and losing to Tyson or Mr. Dream produces an immediate game over.
Punch-Out!! is not a realistic boxing simulation, but its precise controls and exceptionally expressive opponents turn a limited set of actions into a demanding test of observation, timing and memory. The colourful caricatures are immediately recognisable, although some rely on national stereotypes that have aged less comfortably than the mechanics. Passwords reduce the need to repeat the entire climb, while the later circuits and final fight provide a famously severe challenge. Its blend of sports presentation, boss-rush structure and pattern learning remains distinctive, making it one of the most celebrated and enduring games in the NES library.
