The Nintendo Entertainment System reached North America in 1985 as the international version of the Famicom (Japan, 1983). After the video game crash of 1983 it brought home consoles back in the West, with a lockout chip and a seal of quality controlling which games came out.

Many series that still run today began or grew up here: Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania and Final Fantasy among them. Games use a D-pad and two buttons.
