The Sega Genesis, called Mega Drive outside North America, came out in Japan in 1988 and in North America in 1989. Built around a Motorola 68000 processor, it brought arcade speed home and fought the Super Nintendo through the 16-bit years.

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) became its signature game; Streets of Rage, Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star IV and a long line of sports games followed.
